carrying involves subtraction and addition you only carry whe the number on the right is to big as you can see on the image 8+9=17 but you cant but 17 on it

what it means to carry

in the image 8+9=17 but 17 is to big so you but the 1 in 17 to the right as you can see the 1 in 17 was moved to 2+3 but since you carried it would be 2+3+1 and that equals 6 so the answer to this would be 67

subtraction with carrying

as you can see you can not do 2-7 so you cross out 1 from the number on the left and add that as 10 to the number you can't subrtact.
