Similar fractions have the same denominator, also called a common denominator. ... Add the numerators, but leave the denominator the same, once you have similar fractions. For example, 5/15 + 6/15 = 11/15 or 6/12 + 3/12 = 9/12.

The least common multiples of 8 are: 8, 16, 24, 32… The least common multiple of 4 and 8 is 8, so our aim is to make both the denominators 8. We achieve this by multiplying the denominator and numerator of the first fraction 14 by 2. Similarly, we multiply the denominator and numerator of the second fraction 38 by 1.
