Making of the Constitution

• The Constituent Assembly officially opened on December 9, 1946

• The first draft of the constitution of India was prepared in October, 1947

Objectives Resolution - later took the form of Preamble

• On December 13, 1946 was moved by Nehru.

• Sovereign Democratic Republic that India was to be

• Federal Polity with vesting powers

• Social, Economic and Political justice

• Equality of status before law

• Freedom of thought and expression

• Safeguards to minorities and tribals

Forming the Constitution

• Dr. B R Ambedkar was appointed the Chairman of the Drafting Committee on August 29, 1947

• Sir B. N. Rau as appointed the advisor of the drafting committee

• First draft was submitted on 21 February, 1948

• On 4th November, 1948, the draft was presented to the constituent assembly

Forming the Constitution

• Between 15 November 1948 to 17 October 1949, it was considered clause by clause.

• Second draft was presented on 16 November, 1949

• The motion to adopt the constitution was passed on 26th November, 1949

• The constitution was finally signed by members of the constituent assembly on 24th January, 1950 - the last day of the assembly.

Finally, on 26th January, 1950, the Constitution of India was officially adopted and India became a REPUBLIC. Every year, on this day, Republic Day is celebrated in India.
