Eukaryotes
You will explore all about Eukaryotes and answer questions as you go!
2
Poll
Do you remember learning about prokaryotes?
yes
no
some
3
Review Time! Lets review about prokaryotes!
They have free flowing DNA, they are simple, have few organelles, are always bacteria and are always unicellular (single celled).
4
Multiple Select
Check all that apply to prokaryotes:
single celled
big
multicellualr
free flowing DNA
few organelles
5
Structure & Function!
Structure and Function! Structure refers to the organelle, while function refers to the job of the organelle
6
Multiple Choice
What does function mean?
the organelle
the cell
the job of the cell
the piece on the cell
7
Poll
Which type of cell is more compliated?
prokaryotes
eukaryotes
8
Open Ended
Explain 3 details about prokaryotes.
9
Review about Eukaryotes!
They are more complex than prokaryotes, have more organelles, and their DNA is housed in the nucleus. Additionally, they can be multi or single celled and are found in plants, animals, and fungi.
10
Multiple Select
Check all that apply to eukaryotes.
can be multicellular (made of more than one cell)
can be unicellualr (single celled)
complex
many organelles
simple
11
Inside the Nucleus!
The nucleus holds all of the DNA within the cell. It is found in both plant and animal cells, and has the blueprints, or directions for all the cell's actvities. It is often considered the brain of the cell.
12
Multiple Choice
What is held inside of the nucleus of the cells?
a brain
a heart
the nucleus
DNA
13
Cell Wall
The only eukaryote that has a cell wall, is a plant cell.
It helps hold the shape and structure of the cell.
14
Fill in the Blank
Type answer...
15
The rough ER transports proteins and has ribosomes on it.
16
The smooth ER
The smooth E.R. does NOT have ribosomes attached to it. This is the main difference between the rough and smooth E.R. The smooth E.R. is also responsible for transporting proteins to the golgi apparatus.
17
Open Ended
What is the main difference between the smooth and rough E.R.?
18
Mitochondria
The mitochondria is the POWERHOUSE of the cell! He is responsible for creating ATP, or energy that the cell can use! He is found in both plant and animal cells, and not all cells have the same number of mitochondria. Some cells, like muscle cells, which do a lot of work, will have many mitochondria.
19
Multiple Choice
What is the nickname of the mitochondria?
the brain
the powerhouse
the water storage tank
the mail room
20
Multiple Choice
Do all cells have the same number of mitochondria?
yes
no
21
Open Ended
In which type of cells will you find the mitochondria?
22
Cell Membrane
The Cell Membrane, is the gatekeeper of the cell. It allows some material to enter the cell, while preventing other material from entering. The same is true for material exiting the cell. It is found in both plant and animal cells, but is the outtermost layer in an animal cell, which is not true for a plant cell.
23
Multiple Select
Check all that apply:
is the gatekeeper
allows bad material into the cell
prevents some material from entering and exiting the cell
is the outtermost layer in both plant and animal cell
is present in all cells
24
The jelly-like fluid all organelles float through.
25
Open Ended
What is the cytoplasm, and in which type of cells can you find it?
26
Lysosome
The lysosome, is found only in the animal cells. It is where cellular material is reycled or decomposed of. This means animal cells can be more effecient than plant cells.
27
Open Ended
What does the lysosome do?
28
Fill in the Blank
Type answer...
29
Poll
Which type of cell do you think is more complicated?
pant cells
animal cells
30
The Cental Vacuole
Plant cells have a distinctive large central vacuole. This is where water is stored in the plant cell. It is also the lagrest organelle in the plant cell and actually helps hold the shape of the cell as well. When you forget to water a plant, the first thing it will do is wilt (or fall over). This happens becuase the vacuole is empty and the cells begin to cave in on themselves.
31
Multiple Select
In which type of cell will you find the vacuole?
animal cell
plant cell
32
Fill in the Blank
Type answer...
33
Open Ended
How is the vacuole responsible for your flowers wilting (falling over) when you forget to water them?
34
Chloroplast
While chloro might mean bleach in Spanish, it actually means green in latin, which is the language science uses. Chloroplasts are green and help the plant cell photosythesize. They create glucose, which is a form of sugar that the plant's cells can use to do their daily task.
35
Multiple Choice
What does chloro mean in latin?
bleach
green
blue
plant cell
36
Open Ended
what does the chloroplast do?
37
Multiple Choice
Will you find chloroplasts in human cells?
yes
no
38
Golgi Apparatus
The Golgi Aparatus, or golgi bodies, package proteins for export an use thoughtout the cell. They are often nicknamed the "mail room" or "Fed Ex" of the cell.
39
Multiple Choice
Which oranelle is known as the mail room of the cell?
golgi apparatus
rough ER
Smooth ER
40
Euakryote Review:
While plants and animal cells are similar they also have many differences. Some kep differences are that the plant cell has a cell wall, chloroplasts, and a large cental vacuole. While, animal cells do not have these features, they do have lysosomes, which are not found in plant cells. Additionaly their general shapes are different as well.
41
Multiple Select
Check all the organelles that are only found in plant cells
lysosomes
large cental vacuole
cell wall

chloroplasts
42
Multiple Select
Check all the organelles that are found ONLY in animal cells.
