First let's define "root." What is a root?

13

14

Roots... the basics

*A root is a morpheme at the beginning, middle, or end of the word.

*It can also be a word just by itself

*The more roots you know, the easier it is to figure out unknown words

*Not all words have roots

15

Roots can appear in different forms

Check out the next slide for an example

16

Example: "aster"

  • aster means star

  • in the word "asterisk" aster is located at the beginning.

  • in the word "disastrous," aster has been slightly changed to "astro" & appears in the middle of the world.

  • in the word "aster" the root can stand alone

17

Word: Aster

  • aster is a type of flower

  • the root aster means star

  • therefore, we can infer that an aster flower looks like a star

18

How are Words Created?

*Combining word parts to make meaning
