Multiplying and Dividing Fractions

2

Recall the parts of a fraction:

 numeratordenomiator\frac{numerator}{denomiator}

3

When you are multiplying fractions, there are up to two ways to find the correct answer.

4

First way: multiply the numerator and denominator straight across.

 23⋅34\frac{2}{3}\cdot\frac{3}{4}  = 612\frac{6}{12}

5

Then simplify your answer:

 612 ⟶ 12\frac{6}{12}\ \longrightarrow\ \frac{1}{2}

6

Option 2: "cross reduce" first, or in other words, you divide the diagonals by the same number BEFORE you multiply... then multiply across

Multiple Choice

Try the following: 35⋅1012\frac{3}{5}\cdot\frac{10}{12}

1

 24\frac{2}{4}

2

 12\frac{1}{2}

3

 3060\frac{30}{60}

4

 1530\frac{15}{30}

8

Hopefully you got this answer no matter how you solved it!

Multiple Choice

Try again!

 67⋅34\frac{6}{7}\cdot\frac{3}{4}

1

 1821\frac{18}{21}

2

 914\frac{9}{14}

3

 2124\frac{21}{24}

4

 78\frac{7}{8}

10

Don't forget your rules about negatives:

11

So when you have this problem, don't forget your rules:

 −27⋅1415-\frac{2}{7}\cdot\frac{14}{15}
You have a NEGATIVE x POSITIVE,
so your answer is...

 −415-\frac{4}{15}

12

Multiple Choice

 −910⋅(−612)-\frac{9}{10}\cdot\left(-\frac{6}{12}\right)

1

 −54120-\frac{54}{120}

2

 54120\frac{54}{120}

3

 −920-\frac{9}{20}

4

 920\frac{9}{20}

13

Hopefully your strategy worked:

Don't forget,

NEGATIVE x NEGATIVE = POSITIVE
