An author writes for 3 main reasons:

  • Persuade

  • Inform

  • Entertain

3

Persuade

When a writer is trying to persuade you, they want you to think or act a certain way. Look for key words in persuasive writing like "you should". Persuasive writing will give you reasons or evidence to convince you of something.

Inform

Informational writing is meant to teach the reader something. It is based on facts, which means it is non-fiction writing. When you are trying to learn about a new topic, you should look for informational writing.
