The Constitution was a new set of rules that told our government how to work.
The 55 men who wrote the Constitution worked on it for four months.
There are 9 different parts to the Constitution. We will first look at the Preamble.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America

Let's talk it apart.

We the People (Self-representing body, without king) of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, (a better union than before )

establish Justice (create a fair legal system/courts) , insure domestic Tranquility (keep things peaceful at home in the US),

provide for the common defense (join together to defend against attacks), promote the general Welfare (help support people's well-being),

and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity (make sure that freedom and liberty is around today and for my future family and friends),

do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America (the people created and agreed to follow this new form of government).

What does the Constitution do?
The constitution is a document that gives the rules for how our government should run.

What is the purpose of the government?
In general, there are four main purposes of government: to establish laws, maintain order and provide security, protect citizens from external threats and promote the general welfare by providing public services.
