Ledger Lines

Ledger lines are used when notes extend beyond the five lines of the musical staff.

Take Notes:

  • Just like within the staff, notes alternate between line notes and space notes.

  • Line notes will have a line running through their middle, while space notes will sit above or below the ledger line.

  • Because you can't use EGBDF or FACE, the musical alphabet (ABCDEFG) will help you determine what the note names are.

  • Watch the video on the next slide for more details.
