  • Humans first used clubs to hit rocks back and forth over barricades of dirt and stone.

  • By 1500, racquets became more wooden with string

  • First restricted to the nobility only

  • End of 17th century very popular and was called court tennis

  • Tennis came from croquet and badminton.

Tennis Scoring

  • A match is determined through 3 or 5 sets. (3 for female, 5 for male)

  • A set is the first to win 6 games (must win by two)

  • If games are tied at 6-6, a tiebreaker must be played.

  • Tiebreaker decided by first person to score 7 points (must win by 2)

Tennis Vocabulary

  • Ace- A serve that lands inside the lines and is untouched by the opponent

  • Advantage- The point that follows a deuce score. If the player wins this point he wins the game, otherwise it goes back to deuce!

  • Break- When you win a game during which your opponent was serving

  • Deuce- An expression that is used when the actual score is 40-40

  • Double Fault- The server has two serves to start the point. Whenever he misses both he loses one point in the game

  • Doubles- When you have four players on the court and two are playing against two

  • Hold- When you win your service game

  • Let- serve touches the net and still lands in the service box. The serve is then replayed

  • Match Point- need one more point to win the match

  • Tiebreak- played when the score in a set reaches 6:6. The tiebreak is played up to 7 points

  • Backhand – The stroke used to return balls hit to the left side of a right-handed player (or to the right side of a left-handed player)

  • Forehand – The stroke used to return balls hit to the right side of a right-handed player (or to the left side of a left-handed player). Forehands are commonly hit one-handed.

  • Serve – Short for Service. It is the act of putting the ball into play for each point.
