Register

• Register is the style we use when talking or writing.

• It changes depending on who you're communicating with, and whether you are writing or speaking.

• There are two registers: formal and informal

Use a formal register when...

• Speaking to someone you don't know very well.

• Speaking to a boss, colleague, teacher, doctor, or to show respect.

• Writing something for work or school

• writing emails

• Writing resumés and cover letters

Use an informal register when...

• Talking to someone you know well

• Sending a text

• writing anything that isn't too important, like a grocery list, or a reminder to yourself
