What is modern dance?

Modern dance is a broad genre of western concert and theatrical dance, primarily arising out of Germany and the United States in the 19th and 20th century.

How did modern dance come about?

Modern was a rebellion against classical ballet because they felt it was too restricting. The pioneers of modern dance wanted to give the audience a new sense awareness.

What does it look like?

Some of the common modern movements are:

• Curl up and curl down
• Flatback
• Leg swings
• Prances
• Chasse
• Lateral T
• Spirals
• Stag leaps
