Simple Past vs. Past continuous
Simple Past:
在過去的時間開始及完結的動作
e.g. I worked at that shop for 5 years. (= I don’t work there anymore.)
過去重覆發生的動作
e.g. I played basketball every day when I was young.
Past continuous:
在過去的一個特定時間,某動作正在進行中
e.g. At 7pm last night I was driving home.
在過去發生某事的時候,某動作正在進行中
e.g. John was doing homework when Mary called him.

Was ( he / she / it / I )/ Were ( you / we / they ) + (verb) ing
e.g. I was sleeping on the beach.
They were eating breakfast at home before school.

Find "When/ While"in a sentence!
→ Generally, we use past tense (shorter action) +past continuous tense (longer action)
For example:
The door bell rang while Ella was playing mobile phone games.
When Mark saw John, he was running in the park.

Verb shows long duration of time→ past continuous tense
e.g. talk, walk, eat, sleep, cook, study, wait
Verb shows short duration of time→ past tense
e.g. bark, jump, clap, begin, end, fall, shout, arrive
