The arts are a type of language for expressing ideas and feelings that every day language cannot express

Symbol
A symbol is something that stands for or represents something else.
In the language of art we use visual symbols to comminicate ideas.
What does this symbol represent to you?

Elements of Art
The basic visual symbols in art are known as the elements of art.
The elements of art are: line shape, form, space, color, value and texture
No matter how a work of art is made, it will contain some or all of these elements

Principles of Design
The rules that govern how artists organize the elements of art are called the principles of design
The principles of design are rhythm, movement, balance, proportion, variety, emphasis, harmony, and unity.
They have a strong influence on the way art communicates.

Media
The material used to make art is called a medium. The plural form is media.
Just as the principles of design affects the look of the finished work, so do the medium and the process the artist chooses

Perception
Looking and perceiving are not the same thing. Looking is simply noticing and labeling an object.
Perception is the act of looking at something carefully and really thinking about what you are seeing.

There are many purposes for drawing. To develop perception skills, to help plan projects and finished artworks are some.

Painting
Painting is the process of applying color to a surface using tools such as a brush, a painting knife, a roller, or even fingers.
The surface is the material to which paint is applied. Canvas, paper, and wood are 3 examples.
Some popular painting media are oil paint, acrylic paint, and watercolor.
All paints have three basic ingredients: pigment, binder, and solvent.

Printmaking
Printmaking is a process in which an artist repeatedly transfers an original image from one prepared surface to another.
In printmaking an artist can make multiple original images.

All prints made by the printmaking process are made using three basic steps.
Creating the plate
Inking the plate
Transferring the plate

A series of identical prints made from the same plate is called an edition.

Screen Printing
Screen printing is used to put words and images on fabric, such as T-shirts.

Photography
Photography is a technique of captureing optical images on light-sensitive surfaces.

Sculpture
Three-dimensional works of art created out of wood, stone, metal, clay or miscellaneous material.

Freestanding Sculpture
Freestanding means surrounded on all sides by space. In other words , you can walk all the around it.

Relief Sculpture
Relief is a type of sculpture in which forms project from a flat background.

Artists use a variety of techniques and materials to create sculpture. The processes include:
Modeling
Carving
Casting
Assembly

Modeling
A p[rocess in which a soft, pliable material is built up and shaped. Materials such as clay, wax, and plaster are used in modeling.

Carving
Carving is a subtractive process. The sculptor cuts or chips a form from a mass material like stone or wood.

Casting
In this process melted metal or another liquid substance is poured into a mold to harden.

Assembly
In this process the artist gathers and joins together a variety of different materials to construct a sculpture.

A credit line is a list of important facts about a work of art.
