From Topic to Theme

But a theme cannot be expressed in a single word. The topic or key word of a story might be friendship, but the theme is something particular about friendship that can be expressed in a complete sentence.

Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas. Themes can be stated outright, or they can be just implied.
