Spain (1519-1685 and 1690-1821)

  • Started at the end of the Reconquista

  • European explorers began claiming parts for their countries

  • Much of present day southwest United States, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean islands were claimed by Spain

  • France planned to start a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi R. but missed it and accidently settled in Texas

  • Spain didn't know immediately about France's colony

Mexico (1821-1836)

  • After Mexico gained indpendence from Spain, Texas became a Mexican state

  • Mexico welcomed settlers from the US and other places to settle in Texas in the hopes of settling the area

  • Texas fought for and won independence from Mexico after a war than lasted from Oct 1835-April 1836

  • Texas had four presidents during it's time as an independent country

United States of America (1845-1861 and 1865-present)

  • The US did not immediately annex Texas after it gained it's independence

  • There were some people who did not want Texas to join the Us due to a variety of issues

  • Texas officially became the 28th on Dec 29,1845

  • When the Civil War ended, TX and the other states were eventually readmitted to the US
