Final Battle

American and French troops and the French navy surrounded the British soldiers. The British were cornered. On October 19, 1781, Cornwallis surrendered to the American army. This was the final battle of the American Revolution. New York City and southern seaports were still under British occupation, but the people of England were tired of years of war. The American victory at Yorktown persuaded British leaders to end the fighting and negotiate a peace treaty.

The Treaty of 1783 was signed on September 3, 1783, thus officially ending the American Revolution. The treaty did the following: British recognition of American independence; The Mississippi River as the western border of the United States, with all the land between the River and the Appalachian Mountains; British Canada was set as the northern border; Spanish Florida was set as the southern border.
