Possessive Nouns
A possessive noun is a noun that possesses something—i.e., it has something. In most cases, a possessive noun is formed by adding an apostrophe +s to the noun, or if the noun is plural and already ends in s, only an apostrophe needs to be added.
3
This is Matt's homework.
If you cover up the apostrophe and everything after it, then it will show you that the homework belongs to Matt.
4
That bird's feathers are yellow.
The feathers belong to the bird, so if you cover up the apopstrophe and everything after it shows that the feathers belong to the bird.
5
Plural Possessive ( just add an ' )
A noun that shows ownership by more than one person is a plural possessive noun.
Add an apostrophe ( ' ) to a plural noun that ends in -s to make it possessive.
Example: The ships' flags were waving in the wind. My parents' bedroom has a large closet.
6
Plural Possessive Nouns (Add 's when it doesn't end with an s)
Add an apostrophe ( ' ) and an - s to form the possessive of plural nouns that do not already end in - s.
Example: The children's toys were scattered all over the floor. The women's softball team won first place.
