What should we look for in an informational text?
Subject; who or what are we talking about?
Main idea; what does the author want us to know about the subject?
Supporting ideas; what does the author tell us that supports the main idea?
Italics and Captions; these are extra hints that give us more information about what we are reading

How can I tell the subject?
The subject tells me who or what the story is about. It is usually 1 or 2 words.
Hints!
It often appears in the title or the heading, and also appears in the text over and over again.

How can I tell the main idea?
The main idea tells me about the subject. What point does the author want to make about our subject?
Hints!
It is in the beginning of the text. It is usually a sentence.

What are the supporting ideas?
The supporting ideas tells me WHY my main idea is correct! If you have no facts to back up your ideas, who will believe you????

And lastly... details!!
Details are going to support my ideas. These give me more information about my supporting ideas.
