Roanoke Island
Sir Walter Raleigh sent scouts to find a good place for a colony. They discovered a place called Roanoke Island (island off the coast of NC).
1585 - After a hard winter, the first group of colonists gave up and went back to England.
1587 - A second group, which included families, made the voyage back. It was led by John White.

Roanoke Island
In your notes, illustrate the voyage from England to Roanoke Island.

Roanoke Island
John White returned to England to replenish supplies.
When he returned, the colonist were gone.
This is often referred to as the "Lost Colony of Roanoke."

The colonists of Jamestown did not find gold.
The hardships for Jamestown settlers included disease, hunger, and hostile Native Americans.
This difficult period is called the "starving time."

The Powhatan tribe helped the people of Jamestown for a period of time.
Pocohantas is a Native American woman famous for assisting John Smith and the residents of Jamestown.
With the help of the tribe, the colonists learned how to survived.
