4 Different Types of Sentences

2
Please pull out your Reader's/Writer's notebook.
You will be taking notes on the different types of sentences. Open to the Writer's part of your notebook and make sure you write the date and topic at the top of the page!
3
As you work through these slides, please take notes in your Writer's notebook!
4
There are 4 Different types of Sentences:
Interrogative
Exclamatory
Imperative
Declarative
5
Interrogative:
Interrogative sentences ASK something.
These sentences always end with a question mark.
?
Examples:
Where are we eating?
How do you play this game?
Where have you been?
6
Your notebook should look like this so far ----->
Remember to use your own words in your notebook. This will help you when you go back and look in your notes.
7
What other word does the word "interrogative" sound like?
Hmmm............
8
Does it sound like the word......
interrogation?
9
An interrogation is where someone asks you lots of questions, sometimes during an investigation.
Think...a big bright light shining in someone's sweaty face while a person furiously asks lots of questions.
Maybe this image will help you remember that interrogative sentences ask questions!
10
11
Declarative:
These sentences tell us about something.
They always end with a period.
.
Examples:
I have a blue dress.
My sister is in first grade.
I am watching a movie.
12
Now, your notebook should look like this! ------>
Get the idea?
13
How can you remember what a declarative sentence is?
Hmmm.....
14
A declaration is when someone tells a bunch of people something.
Sometimes it's a fancy, royal prince with a big scroll who is telling all of the people in his kingdom how to live their lives.
So, when you hear "declarative sentence" you can picture a prince with a crown, holding a piece of paper telling his kingdom something.
Get the visual? No? Okay tough crowd...
15
16
Imperative:
An imperative sentence tells someone to do something.
It usually ends with a period.
.
Examples:
Clean your room.
Do your homework, please.
Pick up those clothes.
17
Notebook check! ----->
18
How are you going to remember what an imperative sentence is?
19
Gosh guys, I don't have all of the answers here!
Wait, that's my job? Whoops!
Do you have a fun, creative way to help us remember what an imperative sentence is?
Email me :)
20
21
Exclamatory:
An exclamatory sentence shows strong feeling.
It always ends with an exclamation mark.
!
Examples:
Mr. McKenzie has long, blonde hair!
My hair is on fire!
The car has a flat tire!
22
Is your hand tired yet?
23
Okay, okay so you want help remembering this one too?
24
"Exclamatory" looks like "exclamation".
You mean...as in exclamation mark?
Yes, yes I do!!
So, an exclamatory sentence uses exclamation marks!
See the connection? No? Yes?
Well, we're almost done!
25
26
Hand tired?
Good!
You can stop taking notes now :)
