  • This stage that we are learning about this week is apart of the same 5th stage you learned last week

  • In society now, the adolescent stage is lasting longer, well into the 20s

  • Overall in your future studies you will likely see the stage referred to as identity vs role confusion

  • It's connected to both group and individual identity that occurs during early and late adolescents.

  • Last chapter we focused on group identity & this week the focus will be on individual identity

This stage explains how teens& young adults personality can be influenced by attempting to establish a defined personal identity in a world of many identities and pressure to conform.

What is Identity v. Role Confusion?

  • On the Identity side of this psychological conflict, teens/young adults who can form a strong sense of who they are will feel more in control of their lives and act more independently.

  • However, if a person ending their teenage/young adult years still suffers from role confusion—unsure of who they are and how they fit into society—they will remain as adults confused and insecure about themselves, depending on others for much of their lives.

  • & much more to become a specific individual.

  • Bill is a star athlete on the football team. In school he slacks off and falls asleep, barely passing his classes. Despite his lack of effort, Bill is very active in his church and sings in the choir.

  • Deanna constantly can be found gossiping with friends at lunch, making fun of the appearances of other students. She is also a member of NHS, serving as Vice President of the group. She often helps out in the community with service projects.

  • Lindsey is a leader in the Technology club at her school. She spends hours outside of school playing Minecraft and other video games. When she shows up at parties she can be a little wild.

  • Rob tries hard in school, but still struggles to earn C’s. Outside of school, Rob plays the guitar in a band he and his friends created. He also helps out on the family farm.
