Journal - What is the theta for a vector that is 27° East of South?

3

Adding Vector Components

  • Find the X-component and y-component of all the vectors that need to be added.

  • Find the sum of all the x-components and all the x-components.

  • Rx= Ax + Bx + Cx + ...

  • Ry= Ay + By + Cy + ...

  • These added together give you the x-component and the y-component of the resultant.

4

Adding Vector Components

  • Once you have the x-component and the y-component, you can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the magnitude of the resultant.

  • R2 = Rx2 + Ry2

  • To find the direction ( θ\theta   )

  •  θ=tan1(RyRx)\theta=\tan^{-1}\left(\frac{R_y}{R_x}\right)
