Photosynthesis

This is a process of converting solar energy into chemical energy.(glucose)

Plants are called producers or autotrophs.

3

Photosynthesis

An autotroph has a special organelle that allows this process to occur. It is called the chloroplast. These organelles are located in the leaves. Inside the chloroplast are certain structures that contain Chlorophyll . The stacks of coin shaped discs are called Grana. Each individual disc are called Thylakoids, which contain chlorophyll.

2 Stages in Photosynthesis

  • Light Dependent (light reactions)

  • Light Independent (Calvin Cycle)

6

Multiple Choice

What is the organelle responsible for photosynthesis?

1

Mitochondria

2

Chloroplast

3

Nucleus

4

Cytoplasm

7

Multiple Select

Where is chlorophyll located?

1

Inside the stroma

2

Inside the thylakoids

3

Inside the mitochondria

4

Inside the nucleus

8

Light Dependent

  • Water (H2O) enters the thylakoids

  • Solar energy is absorbed by the chlorophyll (pigment that makes the plant green) in the thylakoids

  • The water molecule is split into 2 Hydrogens and Oxygen

  • Oxygen is released as a byproduct (waste)

  • ATP is created in this stage

  • A hydrogen is picked up by NADP+ to make energy.

Multiple Choice

What absorbs the light energy in the light dependent stage?

1

chloroplast

2

stroma

3

chlorophyll

4

ATP

10

Open Ended

What 2 energies are made in the light reactions?

11

Fill in the Blank

Water is ______ during the light reactions?

12

Light Independent

Also known as the Calvin Cycle.

This cycle occurs anytime if the day, can also be called the dark reactions.

This happens in the Stroma (jelly like free space)

ATP and NADPH are used in the calvin cycle along with CO2.

Glucose is the main product made in the calvin cycle.

ATP turns into ADP and NAPPH turns into NADP+ because the energy is used.
