Lesson 2: I can analyze character interactions in order to draw conclusions about Jonas’ community and the text’s setting.

We began reading chapter 1 of The Giver, analyzed word meanings and their connotations, and described the setting of Jonas’ community in the text.

Today we will:

●Finish reading chapter 1 of The Giver.

●Make inferences (a conclusion) about Jonas’ community  (the text’s setting) based on character interactions.

 By the end of this lesson:

●Write a paragraph to describe how Jonas’ community and its values are similar to and different from your community.

Cite at least two pieces of text evidence to support your description of the community

You will need:

●The Giver by Lois Lowry

●Your Split-page notes

We will pause to check for understanding and unfamiliar words

Follow along as I read the beginning of chapter 1 of The Giver

Start : page 6 “ Who wants to be the first tonight , for feelings?”

Stop: page 13 “ Yes,” she said. “

Discuss with a partner:

●What is surprising about this conversation?

●What can you conclude about Jonas’ community given these details?

Reread the following section and answer questions numbers 4-6:
