Multiple Choice
As a teacher, I have had the privilege to teach both freshmen and seniors throughout much of my career. Only a few years separate them, but it might as well be decades. They are both teenagers, yes, and thus share many of the traditional teenage traits, but their differences are what make teaching such a marvelous and maddening challenge.

Multiple Choice
What does it mean to be a “student”? Are we students of some sort all throughout our lives? Students in school, students on the field, students on the job, students of love, students of life. Seems to me that learning is always happening, or it should be, and that’s why it’s so important to imagine ourselves as students no matter our age or station in life.

Multiple Choice
It would be a mistake to assume all students are cut from the same cloth, but some new teachers might find it helpful to organize students into these four groups:
1. The Puppy: sweet and eager to please
2. The Sloth: might be awake, might not be
3. The Turtle: fascinating but stuck in a shell
4. The Lion: dominant, fearless, willing to attack

Multiple Choice
The photograph hangs in my office. In each of the collage’s four plates there are two females, one much taller—and older—than the other. Each plate represents the same day of another year, revealing how both aged and grew up. The older one’s hair is curly, in shades varying blonde to reddish brown and back again. The other’s hair is dark, like chocolate, but sprinkled with gold glitter or tied up with black and gold bows. Both are dressed in those same colors, but the small one wears them boldly: gold lame hot pants over black leggings, tall shining knee socks and a black sequined tee, ropes of gold beads draped around her neck.

Multiple Choice
It’s taken four colleges and three degrees, but I’ve finally figured out how to be a great student. I first learned I had to study hard and use my time wisely. Then I recognized the need for a mentor, someone to guide me through major milestones and decision making. I finally figured out it wasn't that I couldn't be a great student, I just needed to know HOW to be one.

Students who are given opportunities to develop their social and emotional skills in addition to their academic ones have proved to be more successful—and healthy—in college and career pursuits.

In the fall of 2011, I met my favorite student. Tiny but mighty, she walked into my classroom and into my heart. We didn’t know it then, but we were about to embark on a journey together that would change our lives.
