Qualifications to be governor

• at least 25 years old

• resident of the state for three years before the election

• U.S. citizen

The governor can...

• veto or approve laws

• appoint members of the state government

• replacement an empty US Senate seat

• grant pardons, reprieves, commutations

• act as commander-in-chief

• call special sessions of the General Assembly

• submit state budget

Vetoes

• Regular: bill is rejected

• Item or Reduction: changes appropriation bills

• Amendatory: governor notes specific recommendation

Lieutenant Governor

• serves as governor if current governor is unable to

• head of different boards and councils, often acting as the governor's representative

Attorney General

• chief legal officer

• provides legal investigations and representation for the state

Secretary of State

• maintains official records of the General Assembly

• keeps the Great Seal of Illinois

• issues licenses to drivers

• registers and licenses businesses

Comptroller

• maintains state's central fiscal accounts

• order payments into and out of funds held by the treasurer

Treasurer

• responsible for safekeeping and investment of money and securities

• related responsibilities to comptroller to avoid wrongdoing

All executive officers are elected together and serve for four years
