Sedimentary Rock
Rocks weather and erode which creates tiny pieces called sediment.
The sediment is eroded and deposited into large, mostly flat layers.
The layers pile up and the weight of the overlying sediment creates pressure.
This compaction squeezes out the space between the layers and causes minerals to ooze out as well.
The minerals act as a glue, or natural cement which holds the pieces together to create sedimentary rock.

Fossil Fuel Formation
Sometimes during the formation of sedimentary rock, many dead organisms can be caught in the layers.
The trapped energy can, only sometimes if the conditions are right, form into fossil fuels.
In order for fossil fuels to form you must have DEAD ORGANISMS, trapped under LAYERS OF SEDIMENT, which applies PRESSURE and HEAT from inside of the Earth. This process takes MILLIONS OF YEARS. Hundreds of millions of years.

Fossil Fuels are
pieces of rock that have been compacted many times
rock that contains 50% plant and animal remains
metamorphic rock
fuels that form from the remains of plant and other organisms that were buried and altered over million of years
26
Multiple Choice
What does non-renewable mean?
Something that lasts forever
Something that can be renewed
Something that will eventually run out
Something that has run out
27
Water Cycle
Water is a renewable resource because it renews naturally through the water cycle.
Heat from the sun warms the water causing it to turn from a liquid to a gas. EVAPORATION
When the water vapor rises in the atmosphere, cool air causes it to change from a gas back to a liquid creating a cloud. CONDENSATION
Gravity causes water to be pulled back to the surface of the Earth from the atmosphere in the form of rain, snow, sleet or hail. PRECIPITATION
28
Water Cycle - continued
Gravity also causes water to run downhill (RUN OFF) back to a body of water (COLLECTION or ACCUMULATION)
Some water is absorbed by the ground. GROUND WATER
Some water is absorbed by plants to use during photosynthesis. The leftover water a plant doesn't need is released from its leaves as water vapor, kind of similar to sweating. TRANSPIRATION
29
Multiple Choice
What is the energy source that drives the water cycle?
The moon T
The heat from our home in the winter all around the world
The sun
he heat generated solely from the core of the earth
30
Multiple Choice
On Earth, what process generates most of the water vapor?
Condensation
Evaporation
Precipitation
Transpiration
31
Multiple Choice
The image shows various stages in the water cycle. During which stage does water flow back towards the sea as runoff?
W
X
Y
Z
32
Multiple Choice
A student draws a model to represent the precesses involved in the water cycle, as shown. To which process is the formation of clouds related?
Condensation
Evaporation
Freezing
Melting
33
Multiple Choice
What would happen if the Sun is removed from the water cycle?
The water cycle would not include precipitation but would continue with groundwater flow.
The water cycle would no longer occur because the Sun provides the energy for evaporation and transpiration.
The water cycle would no longer occur because the Sun provides energy for the formation of clouds.
The water cycle would not include evaporation and transpiration but would continue with condensation.
34
Multiple Choice
In which area would the rate of evaporation be the lowest?
Over the ocean
Over the mountains
Over the rainforest
Over the desert
35
Multiple Choice
Which example is a form of precipitation?
Dew
Fog
Frost
Hail
36
Weather vs. Climate
Weather is very specific description of the air outdoors. Weather is observed over a short period of time and changes frequently.
Climate is the usual weather of a place. Climate gathers general data over a long period of time for a regional area.
