The coordinate plane

There are 4 quadrants in the coordinate plane.

The point (0,0) is called the origin.

When plotting a point, always start with the x value first. (x, y)

Linear Equations

A linear equation is an equation that forms a line when graphed on a coordinate plane.

y=3x+1

y=x+2

X and Y intercepts

An x intercept is where the line crosses the x-axis. The y value for an x intercept is 0.

A y intercept is where the line crosses the y-axis. The x value for a y intercept is 0.

How to find intercepts from a linear equation:

To find the x intercept, plug in 0 for y.

To find the y intercept, plug in 0 for x.

Example: Find the x and y intercepts for the equation y=2x+4

To find the x intercept, plug in 0 for y.

y= 2x + 4

Solve.

Example: Find the x and y intercepts for the equation y=2x+4
