Wild chimpanzees are rapidly disappearing; therefore, some people are trying to protect their habitats. If people try to save the rain forests and woodlands where the chimps live from being cut down, then their numbers will not continue to decrease. Otherwise, chimpanzees may one day exist only in zoos.

Chimpanzees and humans are similar in many ways. A baby chimp laughs when its mother tickles it. After chimpanzees fight, they kiss and make-up. When one chimpanzee comforts another, it gives it a hug or pat on the back. There are, of course, many ways that chimpanzees and humans are different. Chimpanzees are smaller and stronger than humans. An adult male chimpanzee stands three or four feet tall and weighs about 100 pounds. But a chimpanzee can lift more weight than a man who is six feet tall.

Multiple Choice
Chimps live in groups and like each other a lot, but sometimes they fight. Because they don’t want to stay angry at each other after a fight, they make up by holding a hand out to the other and kissing. They show they are sorry with pats and hugs. As a result, the anger goes away.

A chimpanzee’s body is made for climbing and swinging in the trees. First, it uses its long arms to reach a branch. Then, with it's flexible hands and feet, it grabs and hooks on to the branch. Finally, it swings from that branch to another branch of tree.

All wild chimpanzees live in Africa. They live mostly in thick rainforests and in woodlands. For example, they particularly prefer the humid forests of Central Africa, south of the Congo River. There are two types, or species, of chimpanzees, the common chimpanzee and the bonobo. Chimpanzees have a great deal of muscle strength. To illustrate, an adult male chimp can pull about twice the weight as an adult male human can. Chimpanzees are fascinating creatures.

Bobo the young male chimp was lazing around among the treetops. It was a hot and humid day in the Congo. Suddenly, Bobo was startled by a screech from below. He looked down and saw a parrot that had fallen from the trees with a broken wing. Bobo quickly climbed down to help the injured parrot. Bobo carried the parrot, whose name was Molly, up high into the trees. There he kept Molly safe and cared for her until her wing was healed. When Molly was ready to fly again, she decided to build her nest in the very tree in which Bobo had nursed her.

Multiple Choice
Chimpanzees are among the most altruistic creatures in the animal kingdom. Indeed, they share food, cooperate in hunting, and take turns patrolling for predators. They have even been known to adopt orphan young and raise them as their own. Without a doubt, chimpanzees reveal a level of altruism that almost equals that of humans.

Did you know that chimpanzees build nests? It’s true. High above, in the tops of the trees, chimpanzees build safe, comfortable places to sleep. They build a foundation by weaving branches over and under each other. Then, they line the foundation with soft leaves to form a mattress. Among the treetops, an entire group of nests can be seen next to each other, keeping the chimpanzees safe in their larger numbers as they sleep.
