Axel was the toughest kid on the playground. He wore a leather jacket with cutoff sleeves and metal studs on the shoulders. He had a Mohawk hairstyle, listened to punk rock music, and hung out with the older kids. He rode his skateboard to school and did noseslides on the bike rack. He whooped on anyone who challenged him, but after a long day of being really tough, Axel’s mommy tucked him into bed at night and he snuggled up tightly with a fluffy pink bear that he called Mr. Tickles.

Bram hated his roommate Keith’s dog. Keith didn’t even ask Bram before he got the dog. Bram just came home one night with a dog. Now Bram had to share his living space with a furry, poorly trained pest. The dog was not house trained. It barked hours on end for seemingly no reason. It jumped all over Bram’s guests and bothered them. Bram tolerated all of this because he was a good roommate and Keith was his friend. Then Bram came home from work one day and found that Keith’s dogs had chewed up Bram’s limited edition shoes. Bram snapped. “Keith, do you want to know what your really awesome dog did? He tore up my favorite shoes. Thank you so much. I didn’t want those anyway.” Keith came out of his room looking confused and upset. Bram continued, “Oh, I never said ‘thank you,’ by the way, for surprising me with this really well-behaved dog. I am so pleased to share my home with him!” Bram was shouting now. Keith grabbed his dog by the color and slowly backed him into his bedroom.

She just wanted something different. She decided that she would break up with Richard tonight. As soon as Richard arrived at her house, she wanted to sit him down and talk to him about it, but he rushed

her out the door. “No time to talk now, Babe,” he said. “We’re late for our dinner reservations.” So she figured that she would tell him at the restaurant, near the end of the meal. She would even offer to pay.

So they a delicious meal and right before dessert, Cassie opened her mouth to let out the words that would be fatal to their relationship, “Richard...” she began, but Richard broke in, “Oh, Babe, I got a surprise for you.” He pulled a small white envelope from his pocket and produced two tickets from it. “Two front row tickets to see your favorite band, The Mountain Boys!” Cassie’s mouth dropped. Richard backpedaled, “I’m sorry that I cut you off again. What was it that you wanted to tell me?” Cassie looked down at the dessert in front of her and replied, “Oh, I forget. Nothing important.”

A mean old man ate a large meal at a restaurant. The waitress tried to provide him with excellent

service, but every time she brought him a dish, he complained. First he thought that the soup was too

cold when it was hot. Then he said that his steak was dry and chewy, when it was moist and succulent.

Then he complained that one of her blonde hairs was in his mashed potatoes, but the hair was actually

grey like his own. She remained patient and continued to try to help him until the end of the meal, when

he left her a quarter for a tip. She replied on his way out, “Thank you for the generous tip, Mister.”

Bobby began studying for the big math test on the bus ride home. He tried to study while walking

home from the bus but recognized this as a bad idea after bumping into a lamppost. When he got home,

he didn't watch any TV because he was studying so intensely. He completed the study guide that Mr.

Morris gave him and then he completed one that he had made himself. Bobby stayed awake all through

the night finding extra problems on the Internet and completing them. By the time the sun rose, Bobby

had mastered the content. He felt prepared as he entered the classroom. He sharpened his pencil, sat at

his desk, put his head down, fell asleep, and failed his test.
