5

CELL

the smallest unit of the biological organization, with all living things having this basic functional structure. It is capable of numerous metabolic activities like transforming energy into different forms and controlling the transmission of hereditary traits.

6

TISSUE

a group of distinct and similar cells that carry out a specific set of functions.

Slide image

7

Epithelial tissue

also called epithelium, is made up of cells that form the covering or lining of all body surfaces, such as the outer layer of the skin.

Slide image

8

Connective tissue

is made up of cells and fibers that are always embedded in an intercellular matrix. It is the most diverse of all animal tissue, as the kind of matrix distinguishes the kind of connective tissue.

9

Muscle tissue

used by the body to contract its skeletal parts.

Slide image

10

Nervous tissue

enables the body to react to stimuli and conducts nerve impulses to various parts of the body.

Slide image

11

ORGAN

made up of two or more types of tissues that are grouped together to perform a specific task. Examples of organs are the heart, lungs, kidneys, and stomach.

Slide image

12

ORGAN SYSTEM

made up of two or more organs that work together as a single unit to perform a broad set of functions, particularly in many-celled (multicellular) organisms.

Slide image

13

ORGANISM

an individual, either single-celled (unicellular) or many-celled, which represents the complete framework of organ systems, organs, and all other components that carry out the processes of a living thing.

Slide image

14

POPULATION

made up of a group of organisms of the same species that are capable of interbreeding and that live in a specific area. A group of tarsiers that are found in the island of Bohol is an example of this.

Slide image

15

COMMUNITY

made up of all the different populations of different species that interact and coexist in a specific area.

Slide image

16

ECOSYSTEM

made up of the living things in populations and the nonliving things interacting or working with their environment or surroundings.

Slide image

17

BIOSPHERE

the part of the Earth and its atmosphere that contains all ecosystems and on which living organisms exist.
