U1L6 Chemical Names & Symbols

Definitions

Element: A unique substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances through chemical processes. Elements serve as the building materials of all matter.

Compound: A pure substance that is a chemical combination of two or more elements in a fixed ratio.

Multiple Select

The first letter of an element’s symbol is always uppercase, and if there is a second letter it is always lowercase. Check ALL of the following that have only one type of element.

1

H

2

NaCl

3

H2O

4

H2

5

Ca

Multiple Select

Which of the following are pure elements (contain only one type of element)?

1

Na

2

NaCl

3

SO2

4

Xe

5

CH4

6

Compounds

Compound: A pure substance that is a chemical combination of two or more elements in a fixed ratio.

In the formula shown, there are three Elements; Cu, S, and O (elements have one upper case letter and sometimes one lower case letter). The subscript 4 indicates there are 4 atoms of the element listed before the subscript (so 4 Oxygen atoms)

U1L6 Chemical Names & Symbols

Definitions

Phase: The physical form a substance is in, such as solid, liquid, or gas. Phase is greatly influenced by temperature. The phase is denoted by (s), (l), or (g).

Aqueous: A substance is aqueous when it is dissolved in water. An element of compound that is dissolved in water will have an (aq) next to the symbols.

Numbers in Chemical Reactions

The large numbers (blue arrow) indicate how many of that molecule are needed for the chemical reaction recipe. The small number (green arrow) indicate how many of the atom are in the formula for that molecule.

Law of Conservation of Mass

Mass cannot be gained or lost in a chemical reaction.   The mass of compounds on one side of a chemical reaction = the mass of compounds on the other side.

29

Multiple Choice

Question image

An old thermostat broke and spilled 2 mL of Mercury. What is the density of Mercury if the amount spilled was 28 grams?

D = m/V

1

56 kg / cm3

2

30 mL

3

56 mL / g

4

14 g / mL

30

Units of Mass = grams (g)

You can also use the metric prefixes, like kilo for kilogram (kg) and milli for milligram (mg).

1000 mg = 1 g

1000 g = 1 kg

31

Multiple Select

Which of the following are units of volume?

1

grams

2

mL

3

cm3

4

Ohms

5

Liters

32

Units of Volume = cm3 or Liters (L)

Often the metric prefixe milli is used, for milliliters (mL)

1000 mL = 1 L

1 cm3 = 1 mL

33

Multiple Select

Which of the two answers below has units of volume?

1

10 g

2

18 cm

3

8 mL

4

18 cm3

5

8 g / mL

34

Density

The mass of a substance per unit volume (unit volume = one volume unit, like 1 mL)

The density of any given substance is always the same (as long as the temperature remains constant), regardless of how much of the substance there is.

D = m/V

D = density, m = mass, V = volume.

Density is usually reported in g/cm3 or g/mL.

Slide image

35

Density Triangle

To help remember the density formula. Cover up the value that you want to find.

D = density (g/cm3 or g/mL)

m = mass (g)

V = volume (mL)
