DIFFERENT TYPES OF VERBS

A verb is a word that expresses action or state of being.

Examples

• We went to Boston last April.

• Is a firefly a kind of beetle.

ACTION VERBS

Most verbs are action words. Verbs can also indicate mental action Every sentence needs a verb.

Examples

• The boys hid in the forest.

• The hotel provided us with rooms after the game.

FIND THE VERBS

• The dog barked all night.

• Brett throws the ball a long away.

• My cat jumped up on the table and ate the cookies

• I wonder if she likes me.

• Tell me the truth.

HELPING VERBS

Helping Verbs

Helping verbs help the main verb to express action or a state of being.

Examples

• She can speak.

• He will learn.

Commonly Used Helping Verbs

• Am, Are, Be, Been

• Being, Can, Could, Did

• Do, Does, Had, Has

• Have. Is, May, Might

• Must, Shall, Should, Was

• Were, Will, Would

LINKING VERBS

Linking Verbs

A linking verb connects, or links, the subject to a word group that identifies the subject.

Examples

• Natalie Babbit is a writer.

• She was the new principal.

• Am, Has been, Maybe

• Is, Have been, Might be

• Are, Had been, Can be,

• Was, Will be, Should be

• Were, Shall be, Would have been
