Why Do Atoms form Ions?

Atoms form ions so they have a full octet of 8 electrons in the outer shell. This males them more stable.

Trends for Ionic Charge

Elements in the same group (column) have the same charges since they have the same number of valence electrons. This should be written in your notes or your periodic table.

According to the Edpuzzle video. what determines if an atom of an element forms a positive (+) or negative charge (-)?

7

According to the Edpuzzle video. what determines if an atom of an element forms a positive (+) or negative charge (-)?

The number of valence electrons in an atom determines the charge of the ion formed.

If an atom has 1-3 valence electrons a positive ion is formed by losing valence electrons.

If an atom has 5-7 valence electrons a negative ion is formed by gaining valence electrons.

Are e- lost or gained when an ion of Sr is formed? How many electrons are lost or gained?

  • A neutral atom of Sr has 38 p and 38 e-.

  • Sr forms a +2 ion, since it is in group 2.

  • To become a +2 ion, electrons must be lost (there must be more p than e-)

  • Each e- lost has a -1 charge, so 2 e- must be lost.

  • Also, Sr loses 2e- to have a full octet in the outer shell.
