What is a homophone?
To all of my super 2nd graders.... By the end of this lesson, you will understand what a homophone is and also be able to detect the different homophones that are used everyday.

So what exactly is a homophone?
A homophone is two or more words that sound the same, but are spelled differently.

Can you think of any examples of a homophone?

Homophones that sound similar but they are spelled different.
We are going to learn about homophones that sound similar but are spelled different and have different meanings.

Homophones Part 1
Here are some examples of different homophones that we use every day.

Homophones: Sea and See / Blew and Blue
Sea and See (These two words are homophones. See means to look with your eyes. Sea is a large body of water that covers the Earth. Both of these words sound the same, but they are spelled different and have different meanings.) Ex. I see the puppy. He is swimming in the sea.
Blew and Blue (These words are homophones as well. Blew means move creating an air current. Blue is a color. Both words sound similar but are spelled different and have different meanings. Ex. The wind blew my blue kite away.

Homophones: Allowed and Aloud /Sail and Sale
Allowed and Aloud (Allowed and Aloud are both homophones. Allowed means that you have permission to participate in a action . Aloud means not silent or whisper. Both of these words sound similar but they have different spelling and different meanings. Ex: I was not allowed to yell aloud across the room while the class was down for a nap.
Sale and Sail are both homophone. Sale means when a good or item can be bought at a reduced price. Sail is a piece of material that is usually attached to the mast of a boat or ship that is used to catch wind to move the boat from one direction to another. Ex: My Grandpa waited until Saturday for the big half off sale. He wanted to buy a new sail for his sailboat.

Knight vs Night
Knight and Night are homophones. The K in Knight is silent ; so you would say knight like the word night. Both of these words sound similar. The difference is that a knight is a man who served as a lord during the Middle Ages. Night is the time period that comes after sunset; when there is darkness outside.

Desert vs Dessert
Desert and Dessert are homophones. They sound similar but they are spelled differently. Desert is a land that is uncultivated and usually is characterized by having a large amount of sand. Dessert is a sweet dish that is usually served after a meal.

Poll vs Pole
Pole (left) is a long slender object made of either wood or metal that is placed in ground as support.
Poll (right) is when you vote in a election to place someone in office or create / take a law.

Knot vs Not
Not (left) means can't do or be.
Knot(right) is a fastening or tying of a piece of strinf or rope.

Weight vs Wait
Weight and wait are both homophones. Weight is used to measure pounds. When you think of this word; think of how heavy something can be. Wait is the amount of time has to pass for an event to happen. When you think of this word; think of waiting in line or waiting your turn.
