Period of Music?
Nationalism in music is not exactly defined as a musical period as this music started to appear during the Romantic period.
In addition, some of the music considered to be nationalist are modern revisions of earlier works from previous centuries

Subjectivity of this music
Unlike other genres of music, the aspects of this music are rather subjective
Nationalist music in essence is music that is representative of a nation or country's values or beliefs.
The subjectivity is due to this being the Composer's view on what they believe to represent their country

Some examples of our music include
Waltzing Matilda
Botany Bay
To Australians these are songs that represent the Blue Collar nature of Australians
What makes this nationalist is the use of Australian folk songs and the use of vocalist and guitars.

Nationalism can be shown through manipulation of musical elements such as
Instrumentation (Timbre)
Rhythms and Textures
Expressive Devices (Dynamics articulations, etc).
Melodic contour (Does the music go up and down in pitch)

Poland had;
Frederic Chopin (1820-1849)
Mazurka's of Chopin
This piece was a symbol of strength and was representative of Poland's constant struggle and fight for freedom.
This collection of works contains themes from folk songs, and its use of melodies and colour are representative of Poland's landscape.

This composer was often seen as a patriotic member of society
As such he would try to represent aspects of Finland in his works.

Aaron Copland
Aaron Coplland was a highly talented composer and would often try to express the flamboyance of America in his works.
