The objective point of view is considered purely fact-based. It does not include any personal opinions and is considered neutral and unbiased.

Objective Point of View

The subjective point of view is a personal view and includes opinions. While facts may be included, they can be biased to support the personal opinions being expressed.

Subjective Point of View

3

Objective Point of View Example:

Jackie Robinson’s accomplishments in baseball make him a hero because he made important racial breakthroughs in sports. In paragraph 15 of “How Jackie Robinson Changed Baseball” McBirney states, “The first baseball player to break the color barrier in 60 years, he paved the way for many future African-American and minority athletes.” This quote shows that Robinson desegregated baseball and proved that people with any color skin can play. He has inspired many people.

Subjective Point of View Example:

Jackie Robinson is my hero because he made amazing racial breakthroughs in sports. I read in the article that “The first baseball player to break the color barrier in 60 years, he paved the way for many future African-American and minority athletes.” He desegregated baseball so we can all play it now. I don’t know about you, but that makes me very proud of him because he showed that people with any color skin can play baseball. This is why Jackie should be everyone’s hero.

The author’s perspective is HOW the author sees their topic and how they present their topic

Author’s perspective can affect what type of information the author shares, how they describe and share their topic, and can reveal, or show, how they feel about their topic.

12

What is the author's perspective of "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire"?

It certainly isn't egregiously-bad. But it is just a lesser version of Ghostbusters. It's a movie that doesn't have much of a reason to exist since Ghostbusters already exists, other than to make a lot more money.

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire achieves the goal of being a fun movie to watch in the presentation style alone. It's a great pace that keeps things moving while giving us time to marinate and get caught up with the lives of the characters.

13

If the author uses a neutral perspective, they will write objectively. The author will only give out facts. There will be not personal feeling given.

The Spengler family returns to the New York City firehouse where the original Ghostbusters have taken ghost-busting even further. When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must unite to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.

Multiple Choice

Which point of view is being used in the following passage?

Even when obstacles occurred, Henry Ossian Flipper remained persistent and calm. In paragraph 6 of “Calm Under Fire: The Story of Henry Ossian Flipper the author states, “Henry, who was more than six feet tall, pulled himself erect, looked straight ahead, and walked on.” The text shows that Flipper ignored the cadets who were making fun of him. When they taunted him from the windows, he just kept on walking. Flipper decided to focus on his studies instead of responding to the cadets. People can admire a man like that. This shows how people should always remain persistent and calm.

What point of view is the following passage written?

When its owner arrives home, a dog may seem to smile. When a dog wants to go for a walk, it may lift an eyebrow and look pathetic. These adorable expressions have helped create a "deep, long-standing bond between humans and dogs," says Anne Burrows, a professor of physical therapy at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They also make dogs unique when compared with species such as wolves or cats.

Fill in the Blank

Is the passage objective or subjective?

Cell phones have been an issue in schools ever since they became a big thing amongst teenagers. Sixth grader Amber H. says, “There could be an emergency that no one knows about and there might not be time to reach a phone!” In a lot of schools teachers take it too far. They take students' cell phones even when they aren't using them and they are turned off and hidden so that they don't disturb anybody. Teachers shouldn't be allowed to take cell phones when they aren’t even bothering anyone. They are put on silent and they are hidden from other classmates!
