2.Representative democracy

3.Constitutional monarchy

9

INITIATIVE/PETITION

The citizens can create a petition for a public vote on a proposed statute, a constitutional or a charter change, anything that they want different. Initiative can be direct or indirect.

A direct initiative is an item that would be put on the ballot just as it is. And people would be able to vote on it without having to go through the legislative process.

An indirect initiative is when the petition gathers the signatures and then turns it over to the legislative process for them to take action on it.

12

REFERENDUM

A referendum is a ballot question that comes from either direct or indirect initiative. And it's voted on by the citizens

13

RECALL

A recall would be an impeachment where voters can remove elected officials.

14

Local Government

  • New Mexico has 33 counties.

  • Voters elect county leaders.

Counties perform tasks that are mandated by the state: running local elections, fixing roads, assessing property, and providing services for people who need them.

  • They are often the first stop for people to reach one of the three branches of government at the state level.
