Primary Chords - Triads

  • Triads (three note chords) are built from scales

  • Triads are built by stacking letters (from scales)

  • The first letter of your triad is called "The Root"

  • "The Root" reveals where you are in the scale (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), and your Primary Function (Tonic, Subdominant, Dominant)

  • Triads also carry specific "qualities" (major, minor, dim, etc) based on their location.

  • "The Root" also determines the "Quality" of the triad (based on placement).

10

Primary Chords - Triads

  • Tonic / I = Major

  • Subdominant / IV = Major

  • Dominant / V = Major

11

Primary Chords - Triads

  • To show that a chord is major, you need to write only "The Root"

  • ex. Bb or F#
