Characteristics of Democracy

Under a democratic system of government citizens are allowed to:

  • offer themselves as candidates for Parliament;

  • participate in electing members of Parliament in regularly held free and

    fair elections;

  • form competing political parties;

  • choose their representatives from among at least two competing political

    parties;

  • criticize government’s policies;

  • have an input in government’s policies through consultations with their representatives or using the media to make their ideas and wishes known to the government;

  • challenge decisions of the government in free and just courts of law.

In some countries, people do not have any opportunity to widely participate in government. These countries have an authoritarian form of government. An authoritarian form of government is one in which political decisions are made by an individual or a small group within the government without the knowledge or

consent of the other members of government or the citizens.
