What is a Cover Letter? (and Why It’s Important)

A cover letter (or job application letter) is a one-page document that you submit as part of your job application (alongside your CV or Resume).

Objective? To introduce yourself and briefly summarise your professional background. 

A good cover letter can spark the HR manager’s interest and get them to read your resume. 

A bad cover letter, on the other hand, might mean that your application is going directly to the paper shredder.

Ideal Cover Letter?

Cover letters should range from a half-page to ONE FULL PAGE. A cover letter should take up at least half or a whole page, but it should never exceed one page in length. Shorter is better. 

Generally, you should aim for a cover letter word count of 250 to 400 words and about three to five paragraphs.

Keep in mind, that a cover letter is a supplement to your resume, not a replacement.

You don’t just repeat whatever is mentioned in your resume.
