When finding the smallest fraction, divide by a common factor.

  • Both the numerator and denominator must be divided by the same number

  • Example 4/10 both 4 and 10 have a common factor of 2 so divide both numbers by 2

  • 4 divided by 2 is 2 and 10 divided by 2 is 5

  • Since 2 and 5 are both prime numbers. The fraction 2/5 is in simplest form

3

Tips

  • First look to see if both numbers are even. If they are you know you can divide by 2.

  • Use your divisibility rules to help you find factors

  • Do both the numbers end in zero? Divide by 10 instead of 2.

  • The larger the factor you divide by, the less times you will need to divide.
