Circuits

  • Using the tracing method really helps if you struggle with circuits.

  • Trace with your fingers and check to make sure the energy from the negative side of the battery is able to reach the light bulb and make sure the positive side of the battery is able to reach the light bulb as well.

Multiple Choice

A student wants to build a circuit. They want to place a switch in it so that ONLY 1 light bulb will still be on and the bell will still ring when the switch is open. Which of these circuits should the student build?

Be careful!

  • Always check that light bulbs are connected on BOTH sides.

  • Always check that batteries are touching NEGITIVE to POSITIVE

  • ALways check switches to see if they are opened or closed

  • Always check that energy from BOTH the positive side and negative side of the battery is able to reach the light bulb

Solar panels

  • Solar panels use light energy to MAKE electrical energy

  • Sometimes solar panels charge batteries or other electrical things

  • Solar panels use SOLAR POWER which equals = LIGHT ENERGY

Light

  • Light can be REFLECTED by BOUNCING off a SMOOTH and shiny surface

  • Light can be REFRACTED by going THROUGH a clear (transparent) object and bending

12

Lenses

  • Lenses help us see things closer and bigger OR smaller and further way.

  • Lenses allow light to go through and bend so that our vision can be corrected and we can see better

  • Lenses are also used in microscopes, telescopes and binoculars

13

Multiple Choice

Question image

This man has glasses to correct his eyesight. How do they help him see better?

1

the reflect light so you can see his reflection in the glasses

2

They refract light through the lens

3

The reflect light through the lens

4

They transmit light so he can see through them

14

Multiple Choice

Question image

Microscopes use light to

1

refract through a lens and see things closer

2

reflect through a lens and see things closer

3

reflect back light into your eyes so you see your reflection

4

refract through a lens and see things farther away

15

Light ALWAYS travels in strait lines until it is reflected, refracted or absorbed

16

Multiple Choice

Question image

This picture demonstrates what behavior of light?

1

Refraction/ bending of light

2

reflection/ Bouncing of light

3

light always travels in straight lines

4

reflection/bending of light

17

Water

  • water can BOTH reflect light and refract light

  • If water is smooth and shiny then you will be able to see your reflection in it

  • If light is going THROUGH the water it will bend and that is called refracting.

18

BE CAREFUL

read and look at any pictures given to determine if water reflects or refracts in the given situations

19

Multiple Choice

Question image

How is light behaving in this picture?

1

Light is reflecting off the water

2

Light is refracting off the water

3

Light is refracting though the water

4

Light is reflecting through the water

20

Multiple Choice

Question image

How is light behaving in this picture?

1

Light is refracting and bending through the water to make him appear short

2

Light is reflecting and bending through the water to make him appear short

3

Light is reflecting off the water to show a reflection

4

Light is refracting off the water to show a reflection

21

Prisms

Prisms are able to take in white light and BEND it to create a rainbow. White light is made up of ALL the colors and prisms are tools to help us see that. Light refracts though prisms

22

Multiple Choice

Question image

How does the prism turn light into a rainbow?

1

It bounces white light as it goes through the prism

2

It bounces white light off the prism

3

It bends white light off the prism

4

It bends white light as it goes through the prism
