  • Cats are one of the most popular household pets in the United States.

  • There are nearly 10 million cats living in US homes than there are dogs.

  • Cats are ideal for many families, however you must think about the impact the cat will have on the household environment.

  • Cats are affectionate and loving pets that tend to be independent.

  • They still require time, care and attention and commitment can long term as they can live into their teens.

  • A vet needs to be able to educate potential cat owners about eh numerous breeds and encourage them to research about the breeds.

  • Assist in helping the family find that cat that is just right for them so there isn't an unfavorable outcome when adopting.

Coat Color Variations

  • Each breed of cat has a specific coat color that are consistent with the breed

  • However domestics shorthair cats of unknown breeds can have an array of different coat colors.

Coat Color Variations

  • Tabby- variations or striping over the base color of silver, red or brown.

  • These tabby variations can be:

  • Classic or symmetrical

  • Mackerel

  • Patternticked

  • Genetorbie

Color Variations

  • Tortoiseshell- Black orange and brown hairs mixed in a variable pattern ( like a calico) are mainly females. Males happen on a rare occasion that the sex chromosomes numbers are abnormal.

  • Bicolor- comprised of a coat with a white background with solid patches.

  • Patri-color- Where more than one color is superimposed on a white background.

Color Variations

  • Chocolate- A mutation of the tyrosine related protein 1 and is expressed as a brown pigment that is the precursor of black.

  • Dilute- Pale in version to a full-intensity coat (blue is a diluted black).

  • Harlequin- markings on the head and the the tail and three small patches of color on the body of a white coat.

  • Marbled- Spots have a dark outer edge and the inner part is lighter colored.

Color Variations

  • Rex- Wavy, curly, or crinkled hairs are coded by genes found in the Cornish Rex and Devon Rex.

  • Shaded- Color on the hair shaft with pigment between light and darker.

  • Van- White coat color with a colored tail and colored markings on the head.
