Back to unseen poetry

Last class we:

Read through the poem several times

Shared the biggest elements that stood out to us

Picked(hopefully) the 3-5 points to form into our essay

9

The introduction paragraph

We've already got this down! This is short, sweet and to the point(even more so than AVFTB!)

10

Intro Paragraph - Flexiable!

  • Topic sentence include: Name of poem + name of poet

  • I suggest also addressing the question...

  • Next sentence/sentences: Give the context and basic summary - they are not looking for a full blown analysis here!

  • Thesis statement! That one sentence that tells us everything that you are going to cover!

11

In the poem “An Abandoned Factory, Detroit” by Philip Levine, the poet clearly portrays this building as one that has been forgotten and left to decay. The poem begins with a narrator looking at the outside of the factory, before moving to describe the inside as well as reminiscing on the work that was once done there. With these observations the narrator doesn't so much ponder why the building was abandoned, but considers what else was lost with it. Throughout the poem there is an intensive use of imagery, atmosphere and symbolism to portray this decrepit building as well as maybe alluding to the men who once worked there.

12

Body Paragraphs!

You've got this!!

13

You know this!

  • Point - what explicitly are you looking at? This should be one of the points that you chose yesterday that addressed the question!

  • Evidence - use the literal quotes to show that your point is valid!

  • Explanation - how does your point answer the question? What does it add to the poem?
