What does the word convert mean when we're talking about fractions?

9

Answer

It means to change the form.

For example, if we convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, we are changing a fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator, to a number that has a whole number AND a fraction (where the numerator is less than the denominator).

What are some real life situations where you might need to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number?

15

Examples

  • If a recipe calls for 3/2 cups of sugar and you have trouble with that number, you can convert it to a mixed number (1 1/2 cups of sugar)

  • If you cut 2 pizzas into 4 slices and ate only one slice, how many slices are left? There would be 7/4 slices left. In order to make 7/4 make more sense, you would convert it into a mixed number (1 3/4).
