SHOULD & WOULD

These two modal verbs are used to give advices or suggestions.

Let's see how to use them.

SHOULD ( for present)

  • Subject + Should + Base Verb

  • Used to give advice or suggestion in the presnt

  • For example- You should not eat junk food and you should wake up early.

SHOULD ( for past)

  • Should + Have + Past Participle

  • Should is used for advice in the past.

  • For example- You should have studied more for your exams. ( contracted form- should've)

WOULD ( for hypothetical situations)

  • expressing desire, polite requests and questions, opinion or hope, wish and regret.

  • Wish/Desire- I'd love to live here.

  • Polite request- Would you open the door, please? 

  • Opinion- I would have to agree.

  • Would as a past tense of will or going to is common in reported speech:

  • She said that she would come to my house.. ("I will come to your house")

  • Why didn't you charge your phone? I told you it would die soon. ( "Your phone is going to die")
