BE CAREFUL!

Most students make this common mistake.

Just because a sentence has the word "like" or "as" in it, does NOT mean that the sentence is a simile.

A sentence has to use "like" or "as" to COMPARE 2 things for it to be a simile.

BE CAREFUL!

Incorrect Example: Tanya and Maria like to sleep a lot.

This sentence does not compare 2 things. It doesn't compare anything. It just has the word "like" in it. It is not a simile.

Correct Example: Tanya and Maria can stay asleep no matter how loudly I yell. They sleep like the dead.

This sentences compares Tanya's behavior to the behavior of a dead person. This is a simile
