Book 1: Genesis

  • Genesis-50 Chapters

  • The story of the promises God made to humans—promises that God begins to carry out through the rest of the Bible.

  • I will maintain my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout the ages as an everlasting covenant, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. Gen 17: 7

Book 2: Exodus

  • God keeps his promise to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by rescuing them.

  • God gives the Ten Commandments to his promised people.

  • Outlines the expectations God has for the people of Israel.

Book 3: Leviticus

  • Leviticus shows us the holiness of God.

  • God spells out His expectations for His priests and people so that the congregation can appropriately worship and dwell with Him.

  • A call to holiness for all of us to strive for.

  • The Tabernacle was built in the desert as a temple for God.

Book 4: Numbers

36 Chapters

  • Chronicles the 40 years in the desert of the Israelites.

  • Why did it take so long? Not a long journey by land, but the people had to learn to be faithful and obedient to God

  • Many people complained, and although God punishes many, he also has mercy on many.

  • The younger generation are ready to go to Canaan, but they are not quite ready.

Book 5: Deuteronomy

34 Chapters

  • The "Second Giving" of God's law, Moses reminds them of their covenant with God.

  • Joshua is new leader, taking over for Moses.

  • “Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!  And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." Deuteronomy 6: 4
